Bubble of movement Last week I spoke with a client who hurt his elbow pushing an awkward, weighted object. ‘It wasn’t even that heavy!’ he said. The client is a big, strong farmer and would often move much heavier objects. It is often the way with injuries – the smallest of movements in the wrong direction can have the biggest upset – just stepping slightly outside the comfort range of the body and you can be in trouble. It often surprises me, after all these years, how small extra movements can cause big results. Why is this the case? We all live in a bubble – let’s call it, ‘The bubble of comfortable movement’. Within the bubble, we can move with ease. At the edge of the bubble, we begin to find it more difficult. Push through the bubble and we are not only outside our comfort zone but in danger of triggering a movement that will be beyond our capabilities. As we get older our bubble adapts to our everyday usage and expands or contracts depending on what you demand from it on a regular basis, leading to a greater or lesser range of movement. What does your ‘movement bubble’ look like?
